Summer Cup History
The Summer Cup was first held in 1890 when Stockwell claimed victory and was run over 13 furlongs.
In 1953 the race distance was shortened to 12 furlongs and then in 1972 the length was converted to 2400m.
Originally a Principal race, the Summer Cup was elevated to its current Group 3 status in 1979.
Summer Cup Betting
When it comes to betting on the Summer Cup, punters should keep an eye on runners that have contested earlier Sydney races run over a distance of 1600m – 2400m.
Good lead up races to the Summer Cup include the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m), where 2009 Summer Cup third placegetter Rockwood came via, the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) held at Rosehill in early December and even the Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) in late November.
It is also important to note that favourites have failed to win the last two editions of the Summer Cup with Scouting Wide ($3.50) finishing second last in 2009, and 2008 Summer Cup favourite Rainbow Styling ($2.70) coming in fourth.
The best Summer Cup betting tip is to place your wagers at an online bookmaker such as Luxbet or SportsBet who offer the convenience of betting from home with better odds and options than at the TAB.
