2014 Summer Cup Will Not Figure for Malice

December 16th, 2014

Returning to racing in exceptional form over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer John O’Shea has refused the temptation to enter classy four-year-old Malice in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day.

Running fifth in a minor over 1400m first-up on August 30th, Malice returned to the winner’s circle in the Bacardi Untameable 3.y.o+ (1600m) on September 20th; continuing to build in form and class via a second place finish in a 1800m race at Rosehill and victory in the Cellarbrations Handicap (1900m) before charging home to win the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) ahead of a classy field on November 29th.

Summing up appropriate options for the in-form stayer earlier this month, O’Shea said the 2014 Summer Cup would have shaped as an ideal target for the Teofilo gelding had it not been a month after the ATC Cup.

“The Summer Cup is 2000 metres but it’s four weeks away and there’s no continuity to it,” O’Shea said after the ATC Cup.

“We’ve got Terai for the Christmas Cup and she’s a genuine two mile and a half horse and I’m not a fan of the restructuring.

“We sat down the other day as a team and tried to figure out what we were going to do.

“The Summer Cup is a month away and he’d have to trial, so leave me out of that.

“It’s a shame because he’s going very well.”

Understandably pleased with Malice’s form over the late stages of the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, O’Shea is confident the four-year-old’s proven strength and fortitude will make for another standout campaign upon his resumption in 2015.

“He’s a great little horse,” O’Shea said.

“He’s a son of Teofilo and we don’t have many of them, but they all want to hit the line hard and try.”

Finishing outside the places only a handful of times over his 14 start career so far, Malice was a standout for Godolphin (then Darley Australia) over autumn this year; finishing a credible sixth in the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) and continuing to build towards fifth amongst classy competition in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) and a close third in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m) most notably on April 26th.
