I’m Imposing Wins 2014 Summer Cup – Results

December 29th, 2014

Chris Waller’s rising 10-year-old warhorse I’m Imposing defied history on Boxing Day last Friday to successfully defend his title in the Summer Cup 2014 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.

The nine-year-old son of Danehill Dancer won the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) 12 months ago and became the first back-to-back winner of the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival feature this year since Donald (1928-29).

A brilliant ride from Tye Angland saw I’m Imposing, who also won the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill two back before a second to Rudy in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 13, beat home Midsummer Sun by three-quarters of a length.

In a close third only a nose further away to round off the Summer Cup trifecta was then $31 outsider Casino Dancer.

A winner of seven of his 36 career starts now for over $543,000 in prize money, I’m Imposing also became only the second horse in over 100 years joining Linesman (59.5kg in 2007) to carry more than 57.5kg to a Summer Cup victory with his hefty 59kg top weight.

Waller was thrilled with the horse’s performance, I’m Imposing saluting for the punters as the $3.30 favourite following his good form since bouncing back from an excusable 14th of 15 runners in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington back in early November.

“All of his runs this prep have been good except in the Emirates Stakes (at Flemington) where there was a legitimate excuse with a lack of speed in the race,” Sydney’s premier trainer told TVN.

“It’s a good effort, just a great horse and obviously a great group of owners. It’s very rewarding as a couple of weeks ago we ran second in the Villiers and we went home with our heads between our knees, but you bounce back quick in this game.

“They don’t have to be the best horse in the stable but when a horse has been in the stable for a long time, it makes it more special.”

Next on I’m Imposing’s hit list is a likely raid on the 2015 Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Waller named both the $300,000 Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast on May 2, as well as the lucrative $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) the following Saturday in Brisbane as his main aims.

“I’m already looking forward to next preparation. I would probably look at races like the Hollindale and Doomben Cup in the winter,” Waller said.
