2015 Summer Cup Field & Odds: Top Three Hard to Split

December 23rd, 2015

The bookies are having a hard time separating the chances of the top three hopes in a small seven-starter field for the Summer Cup 2015 this Saturday at the Boxing Day races in Sydney.

Royal Randwick Racecourse is host to nine races on December 26 headlined by the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) that is set to run as Race 3 at 1:55pm (AEST).

The 13 total nominations were cut nearly in half at final acceptance stage on Wednesday leaving a diminutive field of staying types in the handicap clash.

Currently three of those pay between $3.10 and $3.50 in the Summer Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au including narrow favourite Junoob.

Chris Waller prepares the 61kg top weight who is still well fancied to take out the trophy even with the hefty kilos.

Blake Shinn is booked for the ride aboard the Haafhd eight-year-old, a Group 1 performer whose last start on November 21 was a win carrying 60kg in the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m).

He drops in distance but has a good 2000m record (15-6-2-2) and will jump from barrier six on Saturday.

Hot on Junoob’s heels in Summer Cup betting this season are then late entry Sebrina ($3.20) and recent Festival Stakes winner Mighty Lucky ($3.50) drawn in barriers five and two respectively.

Bjorn Baker prepares four-year-old Sebring mare Sebrina who has won one from five at the track and comes off a brave second carrying 60kg when beaten just a short half-head over 1900m at Rosehill on December 19.

She is on a quick back-up and stepping up to stakes company, but is set to relish the drop down to the 54kg minimum with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle.

Mighty Lucky carries 56kg with Kathy O’Hara riding Fred Cowell’s Gosford-trained Casino Prince six-year-old, winner of the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) in late November.

His latest run was in Randwick’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) when fifth to Happy Clapper in the mile feature two weeks ago, but with winning form only up to 1500m the distance is the real test for Mighty Lucky on the weekend.

Waller has taken out the past two Summer Cup editions with Irish import I’m Imposing who is the other single figure fancy to make history with his third consecutive win in the end of season showdown.

Now a 10-year-old, I’m Imposing pays $5 to atone for his 12th in the Villiers Stakes with an upset in the Summer Cup to finish off his career on the track.
